'Brothers & Sisters' Portraits for OATH Magazine

I had the honor to photograph for one of my all time favourite magazines, South African based OATH Magazine. I photographed Alice and Andreia, and James and John for the series feature “Brothers and Sisters” in Cape Town.

David Avido for VOGUE Italia

Last year I travelled to Kenya, a place I have dreamt about for years. I fell madly in love with the place… the people, the smell of the earth, the tropical weather, the distinctive African sunlight, the flair the fashion the music and many subcultures. I felt my pulse beating to another rhythm. I shot this story of local Nairobi artist and fashion designer, David Avido for VOGUE Italia with my creative director and friend, Charlotte Carter. The full VOGUE feature is here.

On shooting the last image above: Oh the vast plains of Kenya ! We had come here in search of the flamingoes, and as we arrived an eerie soft breeze escorted them away, their shrill cries echoing across the lake. They had sensed the storm coming. So we packed out the van to shoot these designs by LooksLike Avido on Prue Lewis and Ronn Wendy Taabu shot minutes before the gust of wind and tropical downpour... we were left in this spot, our driver had driven off for lunch and not returned and we ended up soaked and hiding all five of us under my reflector board until a park ranger came. As we rushed to the car I slipped on the flamingo fishy stinky mud, flatdown on my back and bum with my camera in tow. We then drove the 6 hour trip back to Nairobi.

Alice Phoebe Lou for Rolling Stone Magazine

Summer and I found myself back on the east coast of South Africa shooting Alice Phoebe Lou for Rolling Stone Magazine, just ahead of her tour with Rodriguez, aka Sugarman. I had known Alice for a few years and met her in Berlin when she was busking. I was unsure of what to expect on this particular shoot because I had never shot with elephants before, though they live on a private game reserve and are somewhat used to people, they are still unpredictable and wild. We had limited time to shoot, I chose fifteen minutes before sunset and the energy and results were magical. The shot of Alice and the elephant with their heads touching was an unexpected and unplanned moment, and one of my favourite of my images to date.

The series appeared in the May 2016 issue of Rolling Stone Germany entitled “Wild Life”, with an article and interview by Ralf Niemczyk detailing Alice Phoebe Lou’s rise from busker to international singer and artist.
